The Layoff in College Football between the Last Game and Bowl Games

Filed on Saturday, January 5th, 2008

The layoff between the last game and the big bowl games are way too long. I don’t have a solution for it, but anything more than 2 weeks has to affect your game. You can’t be at your best after a long layoff, so we aren’t seeing the teams at their best come bowl time.

My friend even told me, that some teams were even able to implement a completely new offense for their bowl games.

With that long of a time to prepare for a game, how can you stay focused on one game that is so far away. How prepared can you be if you have like 4 weeks till the game? In bowl games certain fixed variables from the regular season change which I think has a major effect on the play in a bowl game. For example Ohio State in the 2006 had a 41 day layoff and got crushed by Florida by 27 points. Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith had a horrendous game, I have to say that the layoff affected Ohio State’s game that day. With that said, do these bowl games mean anything to show who’s the better team especially in the BCS National Championship Game.
